On Foot

New Plymouth District has a number of fabulous walkways on offer including the Coastal Walkway, Barrett Domain Walkway, Te Henui Walkway and Huatoki Walkway, as well as tracks around Lakes Rotomanu and Mangamahoe.

Or venture further afield and visit the Egmont National Park and other reserves, pull on your walking boots and experience nature up close and personally.

Hints for walkers

  • Find out the weather forecast and dress to the conditions (light, comfortable clothing in summer and warm, waterproof clothing in winter). For longer walks always carry extra clothing for unexpected changes in the weather.
  • Wear comfortable, well-fitting footwear suitable for walking.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return. Avoid walking alone in secluded areas.
  • Take some fluids to drink and sunblock in the summer.
  • Walk tall, being aware of good posture – shoulders back, chest open, chin up
  • Walk with company, especially if you lack motivation.
  • Start with short walks and gradually build up distance and pace until you’re able to do at least 30 minutes of fast walking everyday.
  • Remember to stretch!
